LITTLE COMPTON, R.I. —
Carefully unfolding a suzani — a traditional Central Asian textile — Patricia Stanton explained the paintstaking work that was put into the creation of the antique fabric.

Women typically embroidered suzanis for their baby daughters, and when the girls’ were old enough, they worked on the fabrics too. The suzanis became part of a young woman’s dowry. By the time of her marriage, she would have close to a dozen suzanis to use for wall hangings and bed linens. . . . .(cont'd.)

Tulip ChairFrom the Living Room: Pat Stanton became so enamored with Suzanis, handmade cotton and silk textiles from central Asia, that she built her business around them, marrying the rich textiles to wood framed furniture. She uses a circa 1960s version of the fabric for her Tulip Chair. 25"W × 23"D × 35"H. $1,150. Like Middle Eastern and Indonesian motifs, which have played a major role in the upholstery fabric business for the past decade, the patterns and colors of Central Asia have a distinct, handcrafted, organic look. “They are rich in fanciful design and reflect the imaginations of the women who sew them,” said Patricia Stanton, owner of the year-old Stanistan Design, a Web-based business specializing in furniture covered in susani upholstery fabric. “You often see planets, suns and moons reflecting the universe. Also abundant are organic and vegetative motifs — trees, flowering bushes, carnations, tulips, almond flowers and chrysanthemums.”

Based on consumer response to her Web site during the past year, Stanton believes the home furnishings market is more than ready to embrace the Central Asian upholstery fabric design aesthetic. “I’m getting a thousand hits a month,” she said. “It’s amazing.”
